School choice and housing should be planned together. This guide introduces international and bilingual options in the Zurich and Zug area for families considering homes in Zurich, Zug or Schwyz. It is a starting shortlist, not a ranking: the right fit depends on your child’s age, language, learning needs and likely next move. The schools named here are in Zurich or Zug; a home in Schwyz requires checking the actual cross-canton commute.

International Schools in Zurich

Begin with the exact campus for your child’s age, rather than the school’s name alone. A home that works for a primary campus may create a different journey when a child moves to secondary school. Include both journeys if siblings would attend different campuses.

Zurich International School (ZIS)

ZIS has two campuses: Wädenswil for ages 3–11 and Adliswil for ages 11–18. Confirm the campus and programme for your child’s year group directly with the school before choosing a home. Request the current fee schedule and a written decision on availability; a relocation adviser cannot guarantee a place.

Inter-Community School Zurich (ICS)

Inter-Community School Zurich is based in Zumikon and offers the IB continuum. Ask admissions about the appropriate year group, language support and any learning support your child needs. Request the current fee schedule directly from the school, including application charges and services outside tuition. Compare the journey from your shortlisted home during school travel hours.

Swiss International School (SIS) Zurich

SIS Zürich-Wollishofen offers bilingual German-English kindergarten and primary school. For an older child, check the relevant SIS location, qualifications and admission requirements directly with the school. Do not assume that every campus offers every stage of the wider SIS network.

International Schools in Zug

For families considering Zug or nearby Schwyz, compare school location with both parents’ work journeys and the child’s weekly activities. A canton-wide comparison is too broad: record the home address, campus and transport option for each candidate.

International School of Zug and Luzern (ISZL)

ISZL’s Zug Campus is in Baar and serves Early Years through Grade 8. Its Riverside Campus is in Hünenberg and serves Grades 9–12; Riverside is not in Lucerne. Applications are accepted throughout the year, subject to availability. Ask admissions which campus, programme and support arrangements fit your child.

Institut Montana Zugerberg

Institut Montana on the Zugerberg offers day and boarding education, with international and Swiss educational pathways. Confirm the programme, language requirements and qualification suited to your child. Request separate quotations for day and boarding arrangements, and ask what supervision, meals, travel and weekend arrangements are included. A boarding option should be assessed against your child’s needs rather than treated as a solution to a long commute.

Curriculum Comparison: IB vs. Swiss Matura vs. American/British

Work backwards from the child’s likely next school or university destination. Ask which qualifications the chosen programme awards and check the receiving institution’s subject, language and admission requirements directly. Do not assume that an international curriculum, an IB Diploma or a Swiss Matura removes every admission condition. For a child already partway through an examination programme, discuss subject continuity and transfer timing before changing schools.

Admissions Timeline and Practical Advice

Start with your child’s current year group, languages, learning support needs and intended start date. Ask each school for written confirmation of availability, required documents and the full fee schedule, including transport, meals and other extras. Arrange a visit or online meeting and test the school-day journey from candidate homes. Admission decisions belong to the school; we cannot guarantee a place or priority admission.

Plan the school journey together with the home search

Build a shortlist around your child's age, current curriculum, language needs and intended length of stay. For each school, confirm current availability, entry requirements, support, fees and the actual campus before choosing accommodation. A school name or reputation does not establish that a suitable place is available.

Include local public schooling in the comparison. The City of Zurich provides a school map and directory by school district. Its Letzi school district asks families arriving from outside the city to submit a move-in form to the district school authority. Use the authority responsible for your intended address to confirm placement and support. Zurich school directory; Letzi move-in procedure.

Check childcare and the journey separately from admission. Test the door-to-door route on a normal school day and plan who handles collection, activities and work travel. Repeat that exercise for each proposed home in Zurich, Zug or Schwyz.
