Moving to Geneva: housing, work location and family setup
A useful Geneva relocation plan begins with the exact workplace and the household’s residence route. A job with an international organisation, a private-sector role and a family-led move can require different conversations. Establish the relevant process before allowing a housing search to determine the arrival date.

Start with the actual work address
Compare city neighbourhoods and surrounding communes by tracing the whole journey. A home near an airport connection may not suit a workplace on the other side of the city. Include the partner’s routine, school gates and the return trip after activities.
Keep homes in Geneva canton separate from homes in Vaud or France when you compare them. Crossing a canton or national border can change the questions about administration, schooling and employment. Treat a cross-border arrangement as a distinct plan requiring appropriate advice, not a simple extension of a Geneva housing search.
Know which welcome and residence process applies
CAGI, the International Geneva Welcome Centre, provides resources for international-organisation staff, missions, NGOs, delegates and other international audiences. Its practical material covers housing, health, education and mobility. Check which services apply to you.
If an employer is coordinating your arrival, ask who owns each step and what remains your responsibility. Establish which authority or employer contact will confirm your status and any family arrangements. The paperwork used by a colleague with a different status may not fit your case.
Compare housing evidence as well as availability
For every proposed home, record the named tenants, occupancy date, lease terms and accommodation evidence the provider will supply. If the arrival is staged, confirm how each household member will be documented. Keep temporary housing costs and extension terms visible.
Visit with a weekday routine in mind. Check access, lift or stairs, storage, noise and travel with a child or luggage. Ask how utilities, internet and mail are organised and whether an installation appointment is needed before the household starts work or school.
Build a family timetable
For public schooling, contact the relevant local education service and discuss the address, child’s age, language and existing school records. Ask separately about lunch, after-school care and holidays. For private schooling, confirm the actual campus and admissions decision.
French learning should be part of the family plan even if work is mostly in English. Ask which information the school sends, how parents communicate with staff and what support is available. Give the accompanying partner’s local routine the same attention as the employee’s first working week.
Compare Geneva with a real Vaud alternative
If both Geneva and Vaud are in scope, compare actual properties and the same household assumptions. Include commuting, childcare and the work schedule before asking advisers to compare the tax position. A lower figure on one line does not decide the whole move.
Bring a one-page summary to the consultation: employment or family route, intended arrival, shortlisted addresses, school requirements and unresolved documents. We can discuss coordination from our Swiss base; this guide does not describe a Move to Switzerland office in Geneva.
