Moving to Vaud: Lausanne, Nyon and the Riviera
Vaud opens a different set of choices from central Switzerland: Lausanne, the Nyon area and the Riviera should each be tested against the household’s work, language and schooling plans. Choose two or three specific addresses before comparing costs. A lakeside description says little about the journey that will shape your week.

Choose your side of the daily journey
If work is in Geneva, test the actual destination from a candidate home in the Nyon area. If work or study is in Lausanne, compare homes around that routine before widening the search east. For Vevey or Montreux, include every regular return trip, not only a convenient daytime train.

Use Vaud’s own arrival instructions
Vaud’s official welcome portal says to register with the municipality’s Contrôle des Habitants within eight days of moving in. Its initial list includes identification, accommodation evidence and a photograph. Read the complete instructions for your route and ask the municipality what else applies. Do not substitute a generic Swiss deadline for this local instruction.
If your name is absent from the lease, resolve the acceptable accommodation evidence before arriving. Keep the registration process, residence application and any permission to work visible as separate items on your plan.
Plan schooling and French together
Contact the local school as soon as the family’s intended address and arrival period are clear. Ask about placement, language support, school hours and childcare. With an older child, discuss the current curriculum and the consequences of switching during an examination stage.
For an international school, request a current programme and fee breakdown and confirm admission in writing. Compare that choice with the public-school route in terms of the child’s needs and the family’s likely length of stay, rather than assuming one is universally easier.
Make the lease work with your arrival
Ask which charges are included, how the deposit will be held, when keys are available and what the handover will record. If a temporary stay is part of the plan, confirm the evidence it supplies and the terms for extending it.
Price the same household in each shortlisted municipality. Include school transport, childcare and extra accommodation if the family arrives in stages. Use a professionally checked tax estimate for the actual municipality rather than comparing headline canton rates.
Make local information usable
The Vaud welcome portal links residents to French courses, accommodation, health, education and practical contacts. Select the sections that solve your immediate questions and keep the names of the offices you have contacted.
Finish the planning stage with three confirmed items: an arrival procedure for your circumstances, a workable accommodation plan and a school or childcare contact where relevant. Keep the remaining unknowns in a short list with dates for follow-up.
