Public or International School in Switzerland? A Family Guide
The most useful school comparison starts with your child, not a league table. Consider age, current language, learning needs, curriculum continuity and how long the family expects to stay. Housing comes into the decision because it determines access to a local school and the daily journey to a private campus.

Write a brief for each child
Gather recent school reports, the current year group, subjects and any support plan. Note languages used comfortably in conversation and in academic work; they are not always the same. Explain whether the family is likely to move again, while recognising that plans can change.
If the child is midway through an examination programme, ask prospective schools about subject continuity and entry requirements before changing systems. Let the receiving school assess the transition instead of treating a similar year-group label as proof of equivalence.
Compare the actual offer
Swiss education is organised through cantonal systems and regional curricula. EDK provides links to the relevant structures and education authorities. International and bilingual schools have their own programmes and entry processes, so compare specific offers rather than two idealised categories.
Public compulsory schooling is free of charge; private-school tuition is a separate household commitment. That does not mean the full family schedule is cost-free. Ask about meals, childcare, transport and optional activities on both routes, and compare the complete year rather than tuition alone.

Language support is a concrete question
Zurich provides German-as-a-second-language support, known as DaZ, for pupils who need it. The canton’s parent information describes how support can be organised. This is a Zurich example, not a promise that every canton or school uses the same arrangements.
Ask how the child’s needs will be assessed, who communicates with the family and when progress will be reviewed. For a private school, ask which support is included in fees and which is separately charged. Do not assume that an English-language curriculum removes every language challenge.
Build a complete weekly timetable
Map start and finish times, lunch, school transport, after-school care and activities for each child. Then overlay the adults’ working days. A programme that fits academically may still require a childcare arrangement you have not budgeted for.
Ask about school holidays and settling-in days. Compare routes in both directions at the times they will actually be used. For siblings at different campuses, calculate the combined routine rather than evaluating each trip independently.
Ask for a clear next step
After a visit, record the admission or placement status, outstanding documents, costs and the date of the next response. Keep an alternative if a private place is unavailable. Admissions belong to the school; relocation assistance cannot guarantee a place or priority.
